11 Helpful Tips for Staying Sober on New Year’s Eve

This New Year’s Eve will come and go like it always does. The sun will come up in the morning and most of America will be hungover. The great news: You don’t have to be. I always suffered from FOMO – Fear Of Missing Out…. until I got sober. I had to be at the best and the coolest parties. For what? For my ego!

The best advice I can share for staying sober on New Year’s Eve: Just stay away from the parties and celebrations that you know are going to be crazy and fueled with booze. If you have you have to be at these parties and there is no way of getting out, have an exit strategy.

Here are some of my favorite ways to stay sober for New Year’s Eve:

Staying Sober for New Year’s Eve #1: Card Games and Board Games with friends.

Staying Sober for New Year’s Eve #2: Bang pots and pans like when you were kids.

Staying Sober for New Year’s Eve #3: Find a meeting. Call a friend – go with a friend. Coffee and Ice cream afterwards.

Staying Sober for New Year’s Eve #4: If you go to a drinking party – bring a sober friend.

Staying Sober for New Year’s Eve #5: Buy a journal & write your New Year’s resolutions down. Start working on them the day before.

Staying Sober for New Year’s Eve #6: Go to the gym on New Year’s Eve. Try different workouts and get your plan down before the New Year rush.

Staying Sober for New Year’s Eve #7: Find a get-away. The beach, the mountains, a hidden cabin in the woods – away from the noise. Start a new tradition.

Staying Sober for New Year’s Eve #8: Stay at home and watch the ball drop from your comfortable bed.

Staying Sober for New Year’s Eve #9: Start a new book.

Staying Sober for New Year’s Eve #10: Suggest a nice dinner to friends and go home afterwards.

Staying Sober for New Year’s Eve #11: Make a gratitude list. Review the past year and be grateful you are sober and alive!

For me: I love to sleep it off. I go to bed before all the shenanigans get started, wake up without a hangover and jump on Facebook to see all of the ‘action’ I didn’t really miss. It reminds me that FOMA is just an ego driven state of mind.
